Juventus Not as Good as Last Season, Gain for Spurs
Former Inter Milan player, Lothar Matthaeus, judge if Juventus was not as good as last season. That could be a boon for Tottenham Hotspur.
The draw for the last 16 of the Champions League which took place on Monday (11/12/2017) night local time, bringing Juve with Spurs. This will be the first meeting of both teams in the competitive arena.
From the beginning of this season until mid November 2017, Juve can only record six clean sheets from 17 matches in all competitions. New line-up improvements occurred in the last five games which all ended with a clean sheet.
But, Matthaeus rate Juve’s back line this season is not as good as last season. That’s because the Bianconeri lost Leonardo Bonucci and Dani Alves in the summer of 2017.
“Juventus are not the same team that has mastered Serie A over the last few years, maybe other teams have improved, but I think it’s more because they have lost some of their defenses,” Matthaeus told Italian Football.
“They have to make some changes after losing Dani Alves and Leonardo Bonucci Bonucci is the leader behind and controlling everything, without him, the core strength of the real Juve team has been lost while Gigi Buffon is not as young or as lively as he is.
“They are not as strong or secure in the back as it was last season – that’s good for (Harry) Kane and manager Mauricio Pochettino,” Matthaeus confirmed.
